CASE STUDY
2025Combined powder-liquid coating plant for firefighting devices, flexible and digitized
Customer
Bocciolone Antincendio Spa – Romagnano Sesia (NO) – 2025
Objective
Create an in-house painting department at the production site to have total control over the quality of finishes, streamline logistics and reduce the time-to-market of products.
Challenges
- Equip a flexible plant for complete finishing of cast iron and nonferrous metal fabrications, capable of handling high production volumes
- Optimize energy management and ensure more sustainable processes, in line with the company’s decarbonization policies
Impact
Technological innovation and sustainability of industrial painting
The decision to internalize painting with a complete line powered by renewable sources responds to the main objective of Bocciolone Antincendio Spa, a historic company specializing in the production of firefighting equipment and firefighting devices: to ensure that its products meet industry safety standards while cultivating an increasingly green approach to industrial production.
The path to more sustainable processes involves reducing logistics, absolute control of processing, digitalization and energy efficiency in production. The combined powder-liquid coating plant designed and installed by Eurotherm at the company’s new plant combines production quality and emissions reduction, contributing to the decarbonization process undertaken by the company.
Combined powder-liquid painting: a custom solution
The internalization of the processing cycle, from washing pretreatment to curing in a static oven, allows direct control over the uniformity, consistency and conformity of the finish of the firefighting material. The coating department attached to production also allows for agile response to the variability of demand, improving the company’s competitiveness through the immediate availability to the market of products with certified quality.
The combined powder-liquid line consists of two spray booths:
- a manual liquid paint booth
- an automatic powder coating booth with a rapid color change system for customization of products beyond the standard RAL3000 coloring. A powder feeding center is connected to the booth.
The powder coating booth is equipped with 6 automatic guns mounted on opposing reciprocators with a start and stop system connected to a template reader. There are also two platforms for manual pre- or post-processing touch-ups.
A complete, flexible and energy-efficient finishing line
The plant currently handles the processing of steel sheets.
Before painting, the artifacts undergo a functional washing pretreatment. The cycle currently includes 4 stages: hot degreasing, 2 rinses with mains water, and a final rinse with pure osmotized water; the possibility of implementing a fifth stage, for no-rinse nanotechnological conversion, has also been planned. After the multistage tunnel, the components go through the 120°C hot air drying oven.
The Eurotherm multistage washing tunnel is equipped with an automatic chemical dosing system, consisting of dosing pump, PHmeter and conductivity meter.
After painting, the parts pass into the 200°C static oven powered by electricity for paint curing. The oven is equipped with manual doors that offer several operational advantages and allow heat to be maintained inside after processing is complete, reducing heat loss and allowing the oven to quickly regain optimum temperature. The doors are equipped with safety sensors.
Paint plant digitization and operation tracking
The coating line built by Eurotherm is powered by the 1-megawatt photovoltaic system installed on the new Romagnano Sesia shed, a 22,500-square-meter area that merges the company’s three previous districts. Digitization is an integral part of the project: a touch screen with intelligent software allows the operator to enter production parameters, and proximity sensors allow the operator to count the items being processed to know the quantities produced daily.
The introduction of the new electric paint system was accompanied by a training course for line workers, organized by Eurotherm technicians at the Volpiano (TO) plant.
Plus
“To enter the world of painting for the first time, we relied on the experience of Eurotherm, a company that was recommended to us by a number of suppliers and that can guarantee us timely assistance. This aspect is key to ensuring operational continuity and minimizing plant downtime.”
