OEM experience and integration of production processes

For a premium automotive and ACE supplier, Eurotherm designs and installs an automated powder coating plant integrated with in-line processes and enterprise software, designed to ensure batch control, operational continuity and consistent quality standards.

The project stems from Eurotherm’s direct experience in designing powder coating systems for structural components for the automotive and ACE sectors, gained on OEM productions characterized by high variability and stringent performance requirements.

Industrial painting as a strategic asset of the ACE sector

In the metal production of the automotive and ACE Agricultural, Construction & Earthmoving industries, the finishing of structural metal components meets stringent functional requirements.

Axle support frames operate under conditions of high load, exposure to weathering, thermal cycling and continuous mechanical stress. In this context, the protective coating is an integral part of the component’s performance: it contributes to corrosion resistance, durability and stable mechanical behavior.

Job-order production and geometric customization typical of this sector impose flexible, repeatable coating processes that are perfectly integrated with the production line. The plant is no longer an isolated department, but a critical node in the industrial flow, called upon to guarantee constant quality even in the presence of variable batches, discontinuous cycles and differentiated technical specifications per end customer.

Centralized management and energy efficiency: the operational benefits of the solution

The engineering approach to industrial painting, broken down and addressed in individual process steps, ensures scalability, repeatability and quality of the end result-key variables in achieving product compliance, i.e., compliance with ACE industry requirements.

Against this backdrop is the new automatic plant designed and installed by Eurotherm: a flexible solution, integrated with in-line processes and with the company’s software for managing the batches to be painted: the frames, or transmission axle supports, that the client company custom-builds for leading companies in the ACE sector.

The design of the automatic powder coating plant started from the analysis of the customer’s production flows and digital systems. The custom design line consists of:

  • 01

PVC vertical flow powder coating booth, to reduce the electrostatic effect of dust and facilitate cleaning, equipped with paint recovery cyclone, filter unit, and color center for quick color change

  • 02

Hybrid-powered curing oven equipped with automatic sliding doors and an extraction heat recovery system. The oven uses a gas burner to quickly reach set point (190°), while an electric battery helps maintain the desired temperature during the firing cycle.

  • 03

Automatic step-by-step conveyor (step-by-step) for batch handling, and motorized descender (lift station) to facilitate loading-unloading operations.

ACE production: regulatory references and standards applicable to painting

In the case of powder coating of structural components for the ACE sector, the relevant regulatory framework is not tied to a single product approval, but to a set of process standards.

Process and performance standards guide plant design and quality control of industrial painting. Among these, it is worth mentioning:

  • ISO 12944 – central reference for corrosion protection of steel structures, adopted in the heavy-duty arena: defines environmental classes, expected durability and performance requirements of the coating cycle.
  • ISO 2409 / ISO 4624 – coating adhesion tests, critical for components subject to mechanical stress and vibration.
  • ISO 2808 – measurement of film thickness, a critical parameter for ensuring protection without compromising functional tolerances.
  • ISO 9227 – salt spray corrosion test, used to validate coating resistance under severe conditions.
