Blasting booth for the railway industry

Operational background and objectives of the rail blasting plant

For the railroad industry, the sandblasting of carriages is a key step in the surface preparation cycle, as it removes oxides, old coatings and contaminants, ensuring optimal conditions for the application of subsequent protective paint cycles.

This includes the construction of a manual blasting cabin dedicated to the blasting of railroad cars for a leading multinational company in the industry.

The cabin is designed to accommodate the entire carriage and measures 31 meters long, 6 meters high and 6 meters wide, dimensions that allow treatment to be carried out in a complete and controlled manner. Inside the facility is a pit dedicated to sandblasting the underbody, allowing safe work on the lower parts of the vehicle, which are normally more exposed to aggressive agents, water spray, salt and dirt deposits.

Plant solutions for total grit recovery

From a plant engineering point of view, the adopted solution includes a total grit recovery system designed to reduce material waste and optimize processing time.

The abrasive cycle is managed by:

  • scrapers;
  • cochlea;
  • bucket elevator;
  • separator;
  • storage silos.

These elements work synergistically to bring grit back into circulation after the stages of separation from waste and impurities.

In this way, blasting can be carried out continuously, maintaining consistent surface preparation quality and reducing manual cleaning activities.

Safety, accessibility and productivity in blasting operations

The booth is also equipped with two dust collectors, dedicated to controlling the dust generated during blasting: this helps to preserve visibility within the work environment and improve safety conditions for operators, in compliance with current regulations.

To support ergonomics and accessibility, there are two platforms for lifting operators to easily and safely reach the high parts of the carriages during blasting operations.

Finally, the system is complemented by a compressor sized to feed four sandblasting machines at the same time, a feature that makes it possible to run multiple workstations in parallel and increase the overall productivity of the pretreatment department.

The combination of useful dimensions, total abrasive recovery, dust control and dedicated operator equipment makes this cab a suitable solution for railroad settings where high standards of quality, continuity and operational safety are required.
